The Number One Hotel in Bangkok
First open in 1876, the Oriental Hotel has been host to an unrivalled list of famous guests from writers to royalty and presidents. For 140 years this has been the place to stay in Bangkok. No trip to Bangkok is complete without a visit to the Oriental Hotel for cocktails on the river terrace and tea in the Author's Wing. If you can afford it, you owe it to yourself to stay here.
Now known as the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, it has kept its status as the Number 1 hotel in Bangkok by maintaining its impressive levels of service, along with many of the original features, and more recently by adding an extensive range of new services and facilities. In addition to no fewer than 7 top class restaurants and 2 bars, the hotel features a spa in a traditional teak house, a large fitness centre, a yoga hall with resident instructor, cooking school, boutique shops and a kids club. If this isn't enough to keep you entertained, you could simply choose to spend the day taking complimentary rides in the hotel's very own teak rice barge.
Guests have a choice of 15 types of room, ranging from the 35 sqm deluxe room to the 295 sqm Joseph Conrad Suite. The hotel has a new wing in addition to the original hotel building. Rooms in the new wing are more modern in design but enjoy the same impressive levels of service, such as butler on call 24 hours, and direct river views. The original hotel building is steeped in history. The rooms are opulent with antique furnishings and artwork. All rooms are en-suite and tastefully incorporate all the modern conveniences you would expect from a 5 star hotel.
