Italian mansion on the river
The Praya Palazzo Hotel started life in 1923 as the private home of a wealthy city administrator. Its position on the river and near the royal palaces and government buildings was an ideal location for one of the senior civil servants of the time. Fortunately for guests it is also a good base for a site seeing tour of old Bangkok.
Khun Praya Chollabhumipanish, the original owner, clearly did pretty well for himself working for the Royal Customs department. The house he built is something of a statement. 17 bedrooms, library, dining rooms and extensive gardens all designed in the Italian palladio style which was de rigueur in Bangkok during the 1920s. The current owners have tastefully updated the mansion, which had been left unoccupied for 45 years until its reopening as a hotel in 2011. The pool, free WiFi and bar are all welcome additions for guests. Fortunately not much else has changed and visitors will enjoy meals in elegant dining rooms and drinks in wood panelled drawing rooms.
The hotel can only be accessed by boat. Don't let that put you off - the hotel has its own boat on call 24 hours a day and the inaccessibility also has the benefit of keeping the hotel an oasis of peace and seclusion. After all who wants backpackers and tourists around when you are staying in your very own stately home in Bangkok?
The hotel offers four types of room, from the 25 sqm Superior Room to the 45 sqm Chao Praya Suite. The rooms may sound a little small, and indeed some guests complain about this, but we feel this kind of misses the point. At this hotel you don't need to shut yourself away in your room all day to relax, you can do that by the pool, in the library or cruising up and down the river in your very own private boat just like Khun Praya Chollabhumipanish.
