1930s Shanghai themed hotel in Chinatown
Don't be put off by the idea of this being a themed hotel. They have done it excellently. So well in fact, that they won a 2010 Sunday Times Travel Award. We think they deserve it. The Chinese theme fits in well with the surrounding area (Chinatown) which is full of Chinese restaurants, shops and Chinese temples. The hotel is also well connected to the rest of the city being only a 10 minute walk from the main train station with adjacent metro station.
This hotel doesn't have a spa, a gym or a swimming pool. But we figure you wouldn't have found these in abundance in 1930s Shanghai either. What the hotel does have though in terms of facilities is a jazz bar with nightly performances, an indoor water garden and a Chinese/Thai restaurant. They serve dim sum as a breakfast option and have daily Chinese music performances in the afternoon by the water garden. No opium den sadly, we did ask.
There are two room styles - Chinese and Chinese. No, only joking. You can choose between full on Chinese and contemporary. There is one suite, and three categories of room: Mei Hua (27sqm), Ying Hua (39sqm) and Mu Dan (49sqm). If you do stay we say go for the Chinese style rooms. These rooms are just how we would have imagined a wealthy Chinese merchant room to have looked; four-poster beds, dark wood furniture and paper lanterns.
